Islet Cell Transplant Program
Celebrates Major Milestone

MUSC's Islet Cell Transplant program is celebrating a new milestone with its achievement of one hundred islet cell transplant procedures. In the period from March 2009 (when the program began) to September 2012, one hundred chronic pancreatitis patients have undergone a total pancreatectomy with islet autotransplantation (TPIAT). This has helped make the MUSC Pancreas Surgery Program of Excellence one of the most experienced and successful islet cell transplant centers in the United States. Read more

Dr. P. Johnstone Maxwell IV, who joined our faculty in 2011, completed his medical education here at MUSC in 2000. His clinical interests include surgery for both benign and malignant diseases of the colon and rectum, anorectal disease, inflammatory bowel disease, as well as diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopy.
