Digestive Problems
Diseases: Small Bowel: Intestinal Lymphoma
Intestinal lymphoma of the small bowel is a recognized complication of celiac sprue, and can occur in immunodeficiency syndromes. Patients with the immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection have a higher risk of developing intestinal lymphoma. These lymphocytic tumors are also more common in men, occurring in middle age or later years.
Symptoms include crampy-like abdominal pain, weight loss, features of malabsorption, bleeding, or even bowel obstruction. A particular type of lymphoma, immunoproliferative small intestine disease (IPSID) is seen in developing countries. Infection may be important in the development of this type of lymphoma; some are reversible if treated by antibiotics in the very early stages.
