Patient Information
Surgeries: Chronic Pancreatitis: Intraductal Papillary-Mucinous Tumor (IPMT)
A newly studied cause of pancreatitis is transformation of the cells that line the pancreatic duct into the premalignant cells that produce mucous that block off the pancreatic duct. This can involve the entire pancreatic ductor it may involve a small segment of the pancreas. If it involves a small segment of the duct, then this portion of the pancreas can be removed either with a Whipple procedure, a distal pancreatectomy or resection of the middle of the pancreas (saving its head and tail). If the process involves the entire pancreatic duct, then the entire pancreas needs to be removed.
