MUSC Ranks 20th in the Nation for the Treatment of Digestive Disorders
July 21, 2009 – Again this year, MUSC has been ranked for the treatment of digestive disorders in U.S. News and World Report’s 2009 publication of America’s Best Hospitals. The 2009-2010 ranking of 20th marked the thirteenth year in a row that the Digestive Disease Center as been acknowledged.
Also noteworthy is the Reputation Score which ranks MUSC in the Top 10 in the nation.
“Contributions from all members from our outstanding physicians to the administrative staff and everyone in between. Hard work on a daily basis has paid off in spades. We will continue to push forward to improve our future rankings and stamp MUSC’s Digestive Disease Center as a leading center for digestive health care in the United States,” said Mark H. DeLegge, M.D., Medical Director of the Digestive Disease Center.
A total of 4,861 hospitals were evaluated in 16 different specialties. Only 174 hospitals scored high enough to be ranked in even one of the 16 specialties and the hospitals with 50 highest scores are ranked. This year, MUSC was ranked in 6 of the 16 specialties:
- 20th – Digestive Disorders
- 35th – Ear, Nose and Throat
- 43rd – Gynecology
- 35th – Kidney Disorders
- 49th – Respiratory Disorders
- 16th – Rheumatology
Also deserving recognition was the MUSC Children’s Hospital who was ranked 28th for pediatric heart/heart surgery in the June 2009 publication of America’s Best Children’s Hospitals.
Each hospital is ranked based on reputation (32.5%), mortality index (32.5%), a new patient safety index (5%) and other care-related factors (30%). The 2009 rankings were produced by RTI International, a leading research organization based in Research Triangle Park, N.C.
