January 14, 2009 – The Carolinas Chapter of the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA) held its first annual Charleston Take Steps for Crohn's & Colitis walk event on June 7, 2008 at RiverDogs Stadium for a crowd of more than 200 enthusiastic participants. Sixteen teams of walkers, as well as more than 20 individual participants, joined together to celebrate raising awareness of the mission of the CCFA – "To cure Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, and to improve the quality of life of children and adults affected by these diseases."

The Medical University of South Carolina had the largest team of walkers at the event – more than 30 strong – represented by the Digestive Disease Center and the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. All participants at the volunteer-coordinated event enjoyed the two mile, family-friendly walk adjacent to RiverDogs stadium. Everyone celebrated at the conclusion of the event with a light meal donated by Sticky Fingers Rib House and Bubba Gump's Shrimp Company. Top walkers and teams were recognized for their achievements as were the dedicated committee of volunteers who organized the successful event.
Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis are chronic diseases that cause inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. Over one million people in the U.S. alone are afflicted by this condition and currently there is no cure. Raising funds through this event enables many groundbreaking treatments, improves the quality of care for individuals with these conditions, and brings hope to countless lives. More than 80 cents of every dollar raised through our Take Steps campaign goes directly to fund research and patient programs in our local community. Together, we can achieve a better quality of life for patients and those who participate in their care. Better therapies and prevention are only a few steps away.
This year's CCFA Take Steps event will be held on Saturday, May 30th at RiverDogs Stadium with a new and longer route. For more information, or to register as a participant, please visit www.cctakesteps.org.
