Dr. Frederick A. Wilson to be Honored During Digestive Disease Week
February 27, 2007 – The MUSC Digestive Disease Center’s Dr. Frederick A. Wilson is being honored by the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) Foundation for Digestive Health and Nutrition for his exemplary contributions to gastroenterology through mentoring. A Research Scholar Award (RSA) will be permanently endowed in his name and the names of his fellow honorees.
The 2007 Mentors RSA is a three-year grant that will enable promising young scientists to establish independent careers in digestive disease research. Because this type of start-up grant is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain, potential researchers are being lost at an alarming rate, threatening the remarkable progress made over the past decades in understanding, preventing, treating and curing digestive diseases. Dr. Wilson and his fellow honorees are committed to helping reverse this situation by making more funding available for the best and brightest young doctors to encourage them to pursue research careers.
The establishment of the award will be celebrated on Sunday, May 20, 2007, at a gala reception during Digestive Disease Week in Washington, DC. The event will bring together Dr. Wilson's trainees, friends and colleagues who make gifts in his honor toward the RSA.
Serving as co-chairs on behalf of Dr. Wilson are doctors Joseph Converse, Robert A. Schlidt and Amine Hila, as well as physician assistant Merriman Dowdle.
