About Us

Our Functions: Research

DDC research is concerned especially with technology development, and evaluation of methods for investigation and treatment. Research facilities include a computer network and informatics laboratory and a technical research laboratory located in the Strom Thurmond Building. The DDC also has resource links with the Department of Biometry, the Clinical Trials Center, the Center for Health Services Research, the Hollings Cancer Center, the College of Charleston, Clemson University, and Trident Technical College.

New Equipment and Techniques: Close association with the research and development departments of US and foreign instrument manufacturers has fueled the production of prototype instruments and accessories which have been made available for initial testing within the DDC. New concepts of diagnosis and treatment generated by the powerful multidisciplinary "hot house" generate ideas for commercial development. The transfer of technologies from other specialties is also facilitated. Equipment is tested on the bench and in models. When appropriate, new techniques and equipment are brought to clinical trial.

Evaluation Studies (Outcomes Research): The DDC places great emphasis on performance improvement and clinical research studies. Close association with the Department of Biometry, The Clinical Innovation Group and the Center for Health Services Research has generated numerous projects. As well as traditional outcome parameters (success rates and morbidity), studies involve other important issues including quality of life, health care utilization, and patient satisfaction. The multidisciplinary nature of the DDC is particularly pertinent to the comparison of "competing" techniques.
